What is EPLAN Electric P8 software?

EPLAN Electric P8 software, the main product of the German company EPLAN, is a professional and comprehensive program for planning and managing automation projects, designing and creating drawings related to systems. control systems, hydraulics, pneumatics as well as drawings of various manufacturing fields. Electrical engineers use this software to design drawings in accordance with the latest international standards for various components of industrial automation.

What is the EPLAN API?

The EPLAN API gives you the ability to add functionality to EPLAN and integrate it into your company operations. Using the EPLAN API, you can program plug-ins as well as offline applications. Creating plug-ins allows you to enhance EPLAN Electric P8 with new functions and insert them directly into the EPLAN Electric P8 user interface. If you use applications offline, you can use EPLAN functions in your own programs. Finally, the EPLAN API puts some functionality at your disposal to allow you to navigate through the EPLAN Electric P8 data model and access the objects of the EPLAN Electric P8 project directly. For example, you can create, edit, and delete projects, pages, macros, and functions.

Development environment

The more appropriate way to develop EPLAN API applications is to directly reference the API assemblies in the .NET project using CLI programming languages such as C# (C Sharp), Visual Basic.Net, C++/CLI. You can do this by just using a text editor and calling the compiler from the DOS box — as described in the topics “Creating an add-in in CSharp” or “Creating an add-in in Visual Basic.Net”.

The much more convenient way of developing involves using an Integrated Development Environment (IDE). We recommend using Microsoft Visual Studio, but there are also free development environments such as SharpDevelop. How you start an API project in Visual Studio is described in the “EPLAN .Net API” topic.

The EPLAN API has apparently been tested and released for Microsoft Windows 7, 8 and 10.

The EPLAN API should not be used in separate subthreads. It can lead to problems because such configuration is neither tested nor predicted by the API designers.
